A kind‑hearted but capricious princess, whose well‑meaning but inept father (memorable performance by S. Neumann) rebuffs a virtuous young king’s marriage proposal. Determined, the king disguises himself as a gardener in her castle, gradually winning her trust. When hostile troops, sent by her father’s misguided advisers, threaten them, the couple flee and find refuge with several humble, generous peasant families.
