Poeten and Lillemor survive on his poetry, but interest is low and money scarce. A creditor pursues them until an inheritance lets them buy a house in a village. Locals distrust the newcomers; soon local merchants stop giving credit and creditor returns. Poeten must decide whether to abandon his ideals and write popular verses for income.
