What Happens at the End of The Long Walk?

How The Long Walk (2019) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The film adaptation of The Long Walk concludes with a devastating twist that redefines the story’s central tragedy. Unlike the novel, where Ray Garraty emerges as the sole survivor, the movie sees Peter McVries take the victory. In the final moments, McVries attempts to forfeit his life by sitting down, unwilling to continue the brutal march. However, Garraty refuses to let his friend die. In a selfless act of solidarity, Garraty sacrifices himself, ensuring that McVries is the one who survives the ordeal.

This victory proves to be a breaking point rather than a triumph. Throughout the arduous journey, McVries had clung to a sense of morality, intending to use his winner’s "wish" for a noble purpose. But the trauma of watching Garraty die shatters his idealism. Broken and enraged by the system that killed his friend, McVries abandons his noble intentions. Instead of seeking reform, he channels his grief into vengeance, using his prize to demand a weapon with the intent to kill the Major. This shift offers a darker, more immediate conclusion than the book's ambiguous ending, emphasizing that the true horror of the Long Walk lies not just in physical death, but in the destruction of the human spirit. The film posits that survival comes at the cost of one's soul, transforming a moral contestant into a weapon of retribution against the dystopian regime that created the game.
