Monsieur Bosquier, head of a private school, is angry when his son Philippe fails his exams, so he arranges a language exchange: Philippe to England, while whisky‑maker Mac Farrel sends his daughter Shirley to stay with the Bosquiers in France. Philippe instead sends a friend, Michonnet, to England and spends the summer on a yacht. The ruse is discovered, and when Philippe and Shirley fall in love they elope to Scotland to marry.
