On a storm-swept night, a loyal servant dog named Yost [Luc Lutz] reads a book that claims storms are stirred by dragons, a idea he soon urges upon his employer. Ollie B. Bommel [Fred Benavente], a steadfast bear and the owner of the house, tries to calm him, but Yost’s conviction pushes Ollie to entertain the possibility that dragons could exist. When a gust flings the curtains, Ollie dutifully checks the windows, yet a shy dragon glides outside unseen, leaving only clues in its wake. After the storm subsides, dragon tracks dot the ground, and Yost sets off to gather more evidence, enlisting his neighbor, Kit Cat [Trudy Libosan], to help him test the notion that dragons are real.

In the forest’s edge, Yost and Kit Cat discuss what they’ve seen and what it would mean if dragons truly walked among them. Kit Cat speculates about the odd possibility that if she ever laid an egg and became a dragon, she would head away along the garden’s back path. Their search for proof becomes a merry misadventure as they stumble upon a mysterious spherical object in the woods and haul it back to Ollie, who misreads it as a simple beach ball. Meanwhile, in a nearby bar, two gangsters scheme to pull off a daring heist at a banquet hosted in Ollie’s mansion, posing as keepers of the evening’s security.

The next morning, Ollie begins preparations for the party while the so-called “beach ball” inexplicably follows him, eventually drawing him outside to the fountain in front of his home. To everyone’s astonishment, Dexter—the dragon that hatched from the sphere—emerges and instantly shows affection for Ollie. Ollie christens the hatchling Dexter (zwelgje), a name inspired by his great-grandfather, and the town erupts with rumors that Ollie laid an egg. The tale spreads from the grocer’s counter to the Marquis de Canteclaer’s desk, leapfrogging from the Mayor Dickerdack’s office to the newsroom led by Mr. Tusker (Editor Phant), until the entire town is buzzing with speculations about the unusual family.

As Dexter settles into his new life, Yost and a duck named Mr. Waddle—hired to serve at Ollie’s party—attempt to give Dexter a bath. Dragons, Kit Cat’s research notes suggest, dislike baths, and Dexter’s playful resistance quickly escalates into a display of size and force that unsettles the guests. Ollie, summoned downstairs, is blindsided by Dexter’s sudden growth and believes the whole scene to be overblown exaggeration rather than a true menace. Kit Cat, perceptive as ever, reads more about dragon sensitivities—particularly their attraction to sweet foods and shiny trinkets—and warns Ollie that Dexter may crash the party if not handled calmly. A physician is consulted, urging Ollie to bring Dexter for a checkup to address his “growing pains.”

Before the scheduled hospital visit, the town’s police chief intervenes, ensuring that Dexter and Ollie go together, while Kit Cat accompanies them to keep Dexter secure. At the hospital, a darker turn unfolds: the two gangsters kidnap Dexter and compel him to rob a bank. Ollie races to stop the pair, but the situation spins out of control as the mighty Dexter snatches him away and dashes into the hills.

Waking in a lonely cave the next morning, Ollie is confronted with separation from his city and friends. Kit Cat arrives, urging him to consider sending Dexter back to his own kind beyond the Misty Mountains, yet Ollie remains stubborn, determined to solve the problem on his own terms. Dexter, meanwhile, empties a bag of dug-up turnips, a simple gesture that contrasts with Ollie’s lingering fear of abandonment. After days of roaming, Ollie reunites with the police and learns Dexter has been caught up in the consequences of the bank heist, with Mayor Dickerdack and Commissaris Bulle Bas [Joan Remmelts] weighing the options.

The town negotiates a deal: Ollie will help capture Dexter and turn him over to a traveling circus, a plan that is supposed to be for Dexter’s own safety. As the pair approach the jail, Dexter’s longing grows; he breaks into the jail to rescue Ollie, and the two share a tearful moment as Ollie finally confesses that he cannot be Dexter’s father in the way he hoped. Dexter shrinks to his hatchling size, his sadness raw and palpable, and Ollie’s name is cleared as he assists in stopping the gangsters’ scheme. The duo’s return is celebrated, and a television ad for the circus appears, featuring the gangsters as hosts, their scheme momentarily thwarted.

Yost, Mr. Waddle, and Kit Cat watch the circus from afar as Ollie heads toward the tent with a wary smile and a pistol in his hand, a sign that he’s ready for whatever comes next. Inside the ring, Dexter’s emotions surge as the crowd’s laughter and music threaten to overwhelm him; Ollie intervenes, firing a warning shot that startles the audience and triggers another burst of dragon power. The chaos forces the circus to crumble, and the gangsters’ loot evaporates in the ensuing gust of wind and heat. Dexter lifts Ollie into the air, and Ollie asks Dexter to put the money down instead of hoarding it. Dexter complies, and the remaining money flutters away on a breeze. The dragon returns to the hills, taking Ollie with him in a farewell that is tender and hopeful.

Dexter climbs back toward the mountains, answering a distant dragon call as a sign that his true home awaits. Ollie’s stubbornness softens into acceptance, and the town’s people gather to toast the dragon and the family Ollie has found among them. At last, Yost’s eyes widen in wonder as he hears a distant dragon’s call, but Ollie believes it is Dexter saying goodbye one final time from the mountains. The film closes with Mr. Waddle trailing behind, carrying a net and a cage in the distant glow of twilight, suggesting that the search for dragons—and for belonging—will continue beyond the town’s borders, and that the bond between Ollie and Dexter will live on in the stories told by all who witnessed their unlikely friendship.

  • Cast notes: and the crowd of friends in the finale includes figures like Mayor Dickerdack, playwrights, and newsmen who witness the unfolding events, with Mayor Dickerdack [Lo van Hensbergen] lending a final nod to the town’s belief in dragons, and Commissaris Bulle Bas [Joan Remmelts] quietly acknowledging the world’s strange, wonderful possibilities. Zielknijper / Markies de Canteclaer [Ger Smit] also appears in the town’s extended story, a reminder of the colorful, comic history that surrounds Ollie’s adventures. Mevrouw Dickerdack [Elly Van Stekelenburg] is seen at various moments, adding a domestic warmth to the resolution and the sense that families come in many forms.

Through it all, the film keeps a steady, gentle tone, inviting viewers to explore the idea that sometimes belief—no matter how unlikely—can spark courage, friendship, and a new sense of family, even when the path there runs through stormy skies and through the valleys of a dragon’s heart.
