Set in 1913, Carl is freed after serving a prison term for theft. Disillusioned, he renounces God and returns to a reckless criminal lifestyle. His world soon collides with Mary, a pious orphan, and their unexpected connection leads to a tender romance that forces Carl to reconsider his path.
