Based on Finnish mythology, the tale follows Lemminkäinen as he courts the beautiful Annikki while confronting the malevolent witch Louhi. Louhi kidnaps Annikki to force her brother into forging a Sampo—a magical device that produces salt, grain and gold. When Lemminkäinen cannot retrieve the Sampo, Louhi steals the sun, casting the world into a frozen, perpetual darkness.
