The Cut

The film follows a once‑great Irish boxer who has retreated to a quiet life running a gym with his partner Caitlin. When a promoter offers him a one‑off fight in Las Vegas, the boxer agrees, but only if Caitlin will train him. To make weight he must shed thirty pounds in a week, and the regimen quickly turns brutal: extreme dieting, marathon sauna sessions, a mysterious pills, and an abusive trainer named Boz who pushes his body past the point of safety.

When the final weigh‑in arrives the boxer is still a few pounds over the limit. Desperate to prove he can still be a weapon, he grabs a kitchen knife and slices off two fingers, then steps back on the scale and finally meets the required weight. The act is both literal and symbolic—he sacrifices the very tools of his craft to force his body into compliance.

The climax shows him in the ring, the fight itself rendered only in muffled commentary and the roar of the crowd, leaving the outcome deliberately vague. After the bout he sits at a diner, a belt draped nearby, and calls Caitlin, telling her he “almost had him” in the last round. He bites into a sandwich, his gaze drifting toward the kitchen door, suggesting that whatever the result, his longing is no longer for glory but for the ordinary life he shares with Caitlin.

In the end, the movie does not celebrate a clear victory; instead it underscores the hollow nature of triumph when it costs the body its integrity. The boxer’s self‑inflicted “cut” frees him from the weight that held him back, but it also leaves permanent scars that remind us the true battle is internal—against trauma, ego, and the relentless urge to prove oneself.
