As the tragic news of Troy Johnson’s untimely death spreads through the once quiet streets of Hillside, California, his best friend Dean Stiffle finds himself unexpectedly unmoved by the loss. Perhaps driven by an instinct to cope, or simply reflecting his own emotional detachment, Dean is prescribed antidepressants by his father, Bill, a psychiatrist, in hopes of stabilizing his fluctuating mood. Unfortunately, this medication only intensifies his sense of disconnection, making it even more challenging for him to face the void left in the wake of Troy’s passing.

Navigating the hostile environment of Hillside High School, Dean encounters aggressive drug dealers, Billy and Lee, who have benefited from Troy’s pharmaceutical skills. Amidst this chaos, Crystal Falls, a flirtatious figure, seems intrigued by Dean, but her intentions are far from innocent. She exploits his vulnerability, pressuring him to recover the remaining drugs hidden in Troy’s abandoned home. When Dean refuses to comply, he becomes the target of a scheme orchestrated by Billy and Lee, who decide to kidnap his younger brother, Charlie, to coerce him into submission.

In a twist of fate, the would-be kidnappers mistakenly abduct another boy, Charlie Bratley, resulting in confusion for the real Charlie Stiffle, who remains unaware of his brother’s plight. Meanwhile, Charlie Bratley is held captive at Crystal’s house, oblivious to the chaos enveloping his family. Faced with increasing pressure, Dean ultimately agrees to search for the drugs at Troy’s home, only to discover that Billy has been misled into believing he found the pills he sought.
