Marianne, a spoiled young woman, falls for the charming con‑artist Valentine, who exploits their romance to secure her father's backing for a fundraising scam. He absconds with the money and leaves Marianne. Meanwhile, her sister Laura loves Dr. Lindley, who actually pines for Marianne. After Valentine’s betrayal, Marianne returns, marries a wealthy suitor, and Dr. Lindley redirects his affections toward Laura.
