Super Capers

A mysterious pursuer corners a woman in a dark alley. Ed Gruberman arrives and intervenes as the woman, Red, reveals she has superpowers and disables the robber, while Ed uses a 2x4 to strike him through a window. Red kisses Gruberman before vanishing into the night, and the police arrive to arrest him.

In court, Gruberman is on trial for viciously attacking an innocent bystander. Roger Cheatem defends the mugger, while the judge grows sympathetic to Gruberman's tragic backstory of orphaning and a circus accident. The judge lets Gruberman off lightly for the window breach, fining him a dollar and sentencing him to a halfway house for superheroes whose powers have not yet developed.

A cab driver who proclaims he used to be a superhero named Manbat escorts Ed to the halfway house. There, he meets Sarge and the Super Capers—Puffer Boy, Herman Brainard, Will Powers, and Felicia Freeze—and begins to learn they exist as a team of powered misfits.

Ed is introduced to the Super Capers and their tech guru Herbert Q, who has a robot and an RV modeled after the DeLorean time machine, complete with a flux capacitor. The team hopes it will help them fight crime, but the vehicle cannot confirm its effectiveness because it cannot reach 88 mph.

The Capers are dispatched to stop Captain Sludge and his Minotaur minion from robbing an armored car. Gruberman's attempt to prove himself is tested when Will Powers sends him out to fight, and a lamppost falls onto Cretan, allowing the team to win the skirmish and drawing Felicia Freeze's interest.

Gruberman and Brainard tail the Judge incognito, but Ed becomes the prime suspect when Special Agents accuse him of stealing millions in gold bullion; a Swiss bank number is found in his pocket, fueling the case.

Red appears and reveals that the Judge is the Dark Winged Vesper and that she works for him. The disclosure reframes the investigation and raises the emotional stakes for Gruberman.

The Judge reveals himself to be Gruberman's father and admits that the stunt that killed his parents was orchestrated by him, though not fatal. He tries to lure Gruberman toward the dark side.

Gruberman escapes during a chase with Sludge, driving the DeLorean inspired RV off Mount Rushmore; the vehicle reaches 88 mph and travels back to the date of his first mission, one week earlier.

Arriving in the past, Gruberman meets his younger self on a bridge and explains the Judge's plans. The encounter carries a risk that one version would combust if they meet, adding a tense constraint to changing the timeline.

With the past self accounted for, the Capers confront the Judge's scheme. Freeze immobilizes the Judge, Sludge and Cretan surrender, and Red is defeated by Freeze, who confesses attraction to Gruberman. The two Grubermans' existence is resolved when the past version combusts.

Having resolved the time paradox, the day appears saved and the Super Capers drive off in their RV to continue protecting the city. They share a moment of quiet, knowing more adventures await.

In a post-credits scene, the Judge meets with his chauffeur and Special Agents Smith, who reveal Gruberman has proven that God exists and plan to unleash their powers; the screen hints at a sequel.
