Adapted from Tokuda Shusei’s novel by Kaneto Shindo, this downbeat melodrama follows a rivalry among women for the devotion of a charismatic car salesman. Masuko, the premier hostess at a cabaret, shares a life with him until she learns he is already married. The arrival of her niece heightens the competition, spiraling ties into conflict.
