Bruno, a quiet thirteen‑year‑old, retreats into fantasy after his grandmother's death while his mother works. He befriends Jean‑Roger, a violent boy from a neglectful home who torments their teacher for fun. To separate them, the teacher gives Bruno extra lessons, but Jean‑Roger's fear of losing his only friend makes him even more aggressive.
