Secret Enemies

In 1941, German-born Henry Bremmer runs the Park Hotel, which becomes the central location for the upcoming events. His wife is recovering in Germany, creating a sense of concern about her safety and the international tensions rising between Germany, Japan, and the U.S. The hotel is also involved with espionage activities, setting the stage for the spy plot.

The attack on Pearl Harbor marks the United States' entry into World War II, heightening fears of German and Japanese aggression. Bremmer anticipates that Germany will soon declare war on the U.S. and prepares accordingly, worried for his wife’s safety and the country’s security.

Bremmer sends his lawyer, Carl Becker, to Washington to try to arrange for his wife to be evacuated from Germany. The authorities, including the State Department and German Embassy, are unhelpful, complicating Bremmer's mission to ensure her safety amidst world chaos.

Bremmer is advised by his chauffeur to approach Dr. Woodford, who has conexiones in Germany. However, Woodford is revealed to be the leader of a Nazi spy ring operating within the hotel, threatening Bremmer’s wife unless Bremmer joins their espionage activities.

Jim Jackson, an investigator, and his friend John Trent check into the hotel to look into the spy ring. Jim is recognized by spies from a photo, and he becomes targeted when they demand Bremmer reveal Jim’s identity, leading to a deadly confrontation.

Jim Jackson is lured into a trap where a radio emits poison gas, killing him. Authorities deem his death a suicide, but Carl Becker suspects foul play. Jim's death escalates the urgency to dismantle the spy ring operating at the hotel.

Disbelieving the official explanation, Carl Becker applies to join the Department of Counter-Espionage to actively fight against the spy ring. His involvement deepens as he seeks to uncover the full extent of the espionage activities within the hotel.

Carl and John focus their investigation on the hotel, suspecting that the spies are communicating through radio and planning an operation involving a German submarine. Trust issues arise among the agents, and Paula Fengler, Carl’s love interest, unwittingly becomes a pawn in the spy game.

Using a prepared setup, Carl and John successfully capture Dr. Woodford and other members of the spy ring at the Adirondack lodge. They intercept communications involving a German submarine, revealing the spies' espionage plans against U.S. targets.

Bremmer uses his ham radio to sabotage the German submarine contact, leading to a gunbattle at the lodge. Bremmer is fatally shot during the clash, and police manage to arrest most of the spies. Woodford escapes but is later confronted in the hotel.

Woodford returns to the hotel to recover his wife, Paula, but Carl arrives and confronts him. A gunfight ensues, resulting in Carl killing Woodford and arresting Paula, who was secretly a spy.

The spy ring is dismantled, and the remaining agents are captured or killed. Bremmer’s efforts, though tragic, have contributed to thwarting a German submarine attack, and the threat posed by the spies is eliminated, ensuring safety for the U.S.
