Presented in eight acts, the film depicts life in a post‑war German apartment building as a microcosm of the country's new social hierarchy—its winners, climbers and losers. Gossip‑minded Frau Mierig (Lydia Potechina) from the rear unit introduces the newly arrived janitor’s wife, Frau Kaminski (Käthe Haack), to the tenants’ quirks and intrigues.
