When James tells his mother Audrey, a progressive San Diego businesswoman, that he is gay, her liberal self‑image is shaken. He then asks her to travel to Arkansas to inform his lover’s estranged mother, Luanne, that her son has AIDS. As Audrey and Luanne confront their biases, they begin to share hopes, fears, and support for their sons.
