What Happens at the End of Odessa?

How Odessa (2019) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The climax of O'Dessa sees the protagonist infiltrating Plutonovich’s heavily guarded island studio to rescue her love interest, Euri. In a desperate bid to save him, O'Dessa agrees to perform on the tyrant’s broadcast, The One. Her performance of "The Song (All Is Love)" acts as a powerful counter-spell, momentarily breaking the hypnotic trance Plutonovich held over the citizens of Satylite City. When she is granted a wish for winning the contest, she asks for Euri's freedom, only to discover that Plutonovich has already subjected him to a "facelift," turning him into a mindless drone. Realizing that there is no winning within the villain's rigged system, she accepts her true destiny as the prophesied savior.

In a decisive act of rebellion, O'Dessa chooses to destroy the studio rather than play along. She sets her guitar ablaze and ignites the volatile substance known as plazma, triggering a massive explosion that kills Plutonovich, Euri, and herself. While the death of the protagonists is tragic, it is a deliberate sacrifice that ensures the permanent end of Plutonovich’s reign. By destroying the physical seat of power and the broadcast signal, she liberates the population from the surveillance and subservience that kept them sedated. The film confirms that she does not survive the blast, emphasizing the finality of her choice to put the greater good above her own life.

The film’s conclusion offers a hopeful resolution despite these losses. With the broadcast cut, the citizens of Satylite City wake from their stupor, turning off their screens to reconnect and rebuild their community. The environment itself begins to heal; the desolate wasteland transforms as plants bloom and grass turns green, symbolizing the restoration of the natural order once the tyrannical drain on the land’s resources was removed. This ending recontextualizes the story as a modern retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, focusing on the power of true love to challenge oppression. O'Dessa’s legacy is one of freedom, proving that her journey was never just about saving one person, but about awakening humanity and restoring life to a broken world.
