After the tragic death of his sister Janet and her husband, Michael 'Mike' Maxwell is compelled to leave his job in Chicago. He is suddenly thrust into the responsibility of caring for his late sister's four children, known as the Kicklighter Kids, disrupting his urban life.

Mike relocates to rural Ohio where social worker Gretchen Rice is tasked with finding a suitable foster home for the Kicklighter Kids. Upon arrival, Mike discovers the challenges of life on a farm with the home-schooled and unruly children.

Mike faces pressure at work as his advisor, Carol, threatens to hand his project over to an inexperienced colleague named Devin. This adds to his stress while he attempts to balance his new responsibilities as a caretaker.

As Mike adapts to farm life, he begins to bond with the Kicklighter Kids, particularly through their shared memories of Janet who once taught them ballet. This connection helps establish a strong relationship with the children.

Mike receives an invitation to a Christmas party hosted by wealthy socialite Al Wilmington. He hopes that this social gathering might provide more opportunities for the children he is caring for.

At the Christmas party, the Kicklighter Kids attempt to win Mike's affection, but chaos ensues when they crash a golf cart into a nativity display. Their antics jeopardize Mike's chances of fostering them, leading to tensions with Al.
