The story begins with Larry Daley, who is just passing through the American Museum of Natural History, becoming quite alarmed by the unexpected actions of the museum exhibits. His panic is met with disapproval from the ghostly figures of Theodore Roosevelt and Sacagawea, who appear from the shadows, signaling that Larry's son, Nick, should take over the guard position.

Nick is introduced as he wrestles with his dreams of performing at his school's jazz recital. Despite his teacher, Ms. Montefusco’s encouragement, Nick feels inadequate, believing he has fallen short in his musical endeavors.

Larry attempts to bolster Nick's spirits and encourages him to step into the guarding role. He reassures Nick that while he will be covering for him at home, he will also take on exciting responsibilities at the museum in Japan during the summer.

The gang arrives at the Museum of Natural Art, where they confront the challenges posed by Kahmunrah and his ally, Seth, the God of Chaos. The duo uses their powers to thwart Nick and his friends, creating a chaotic scene in the art gallery.
