Martha is a local TV talk show associate producer in San Diego who longs for romance but is repeatedly let down by a string of charming suitors. She grows increasingly wary as Whitman manipulates her family and social circle, using charm to disguise a dangerous, controlling nature. Her resolve hardens as she fights to expose the truth and survive his escalating schemes.

Whitman appears as a charismatic poet and investor who wins Martha with a perfect facade. Behind the charm lies a narcissistic sociopath who stalks and controllingly manipulates those around him. He commits petty crimes to maintain control and orchestrates Martha s break from reality by isolating her from friends and family.

Inga is Whitman s volatile ex who joins him in tormenting Martha. She helps orchestrate harassment and violence, and is willing to shoot at Martha from a church balcony. In the end she and Bob marry and open a pet store in Albuquerque, continuing the web of criminal behavior.

Bob is Inga s accomplice who appears as part of the harassment and violent schemes. He helps with the intimidation and abduction plot, though he ends up separated from Whitman and Inga as the plan unravels. He later parts ways and, with Inga, starts a new life in Albuquerque after their marriage.

Walter is Martha s coworker who refuses to give up on her and becomes the key rescuer in the end. He travels to Mexico to warn her and helps orchestrate a rescue, challenging the manipulative web Whitman has spun. His actions ultimately help reveal the truth and set up a new life for the couple.

Mrs. Crawford is Whitman s eccentric mother whose approval and naivety help keep Whitman s deception alive in social circles. She embodies the family dynamic that Whitman exploits, providing a veneer of respectability to his schemes.
