Martha, rebuffed by her parents, takes husband Rémy and baby Lise to Spain to meet sister Marie. After a fight they return to France, where Martha’s mental health declines. She leaves, drinks, is raped, and is hospitalized. Rémy raises Lise alone, selling second‑hand clothes. When Martha is released, they go to a country cottage, but her illness remains.
