An elderly storyteller recounts early human life, focusing on the hapless caveman Weakhands, who lacks the strength to court a woman. After being mocked by the brutish Bruteforce, he meets the grieving Lillywhite, and they fall in love. Bruteforce separates them, forcing Weakhands to flee. In his cave he devises a stone club, uses it to defeat Bruteforce, wins Lillywhite back, and marks a primitive step forward in human progress.
