In Arabic, “mameluke” means white slave, a term for people from Georgia and the Caucasus. Two friends are seized in 18th‑century Georgia and sold—one to Egypt, the other to Venice. Years later they meet near the pyramids as French and Egyptian forces clash. Mameluke wounds a French officer, who falls from his horse and cries “Vai, nana!” in Georgian, recognizing a friend.
