A woman, a romantic novel reader, marries a widowed country doctor. Though he dotes on her, she soon grows bored and seeks excitement, first with a law student, then with a lover. When he refuses to run away, she returns to the clerk. Her spending on dresses, furnishings, and poor financial advice to her husband bring his ruin.
