Antoine, aiming to rise in Paris society, drops the name of aristocrat Jordan to get into an exclusive party. Host von Bulow, unmoved by the lie, hands him $100 000 and offers $900 000 more if he can locate Jordan. With his friend Étienne, Antoine roams the night‑filled streets, endures beatings, meets Jordan’s sister Violaine, and is torn between the money, the hunt, and his attraction to her.
