Kill Your Lover (2024) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The ending of "Kill Your Lover" is intense and symbolically charged. Dakota, having endured a toxic and manipulative relationship with Axel, reaches her breaking point. Throughout the story, Axel’s body is shown to be infected with a strange, vein-like chemical growth, representing the toxicity that his personality and their relationship have fostered. When Axel refuses to let Dakota leave, their struggle escalates into violence. In a desperate attempt to free herself, Dakota stabs Axel and pulls out his heart, symbolizing her final act of liberation from his obsession and control. The act of ripping out his heart can be seen as a literal and figurative expression of ending his hold over her life. The final scenes suggest that after her act of violence, Axel loses all sense of self—his disappearance into chaos and destruction marks the complete breakdown of his obsession. Dakota’s drastic action is her attempt to escape a relationship that has drained her emotionally and physically, and by removing Axel’s metaphorical and literal heart, she symbolically Sever ties with her past and the toxicity that defined their destructive love. The film leaves her future open, implying that only by destroying the source of her trauma could she genuinely move forward, even if the journey ahead remains uncertain.
