Shekhar completes his studies in London and returns to take charge of the family business. The household life is rigid, with the domineering mother enforcing silence and banning laughter. He initially embraces these traditions, letting the old order shape his days.

The household life is strict and filled with quiet decorum, leaving little room for joy. Mala, however, laughs freely and resists the rigid code. This difference in temperament sets up the underlying tension in the family.

Mala falls in love with Jeevan, an employee in the family business. Their romance is forbidden by the family, creating tension and secrecy. Shekhar is aware of the growing tension but remains emotionally distant at first.

On discovering Mala's love, their mother orders them apart and sends Mala to a distant place to forget the man. Shekhar agrees to take Mala to a remote location to enforce the separation.

To enforce the separation, Shekhar takes Mala to Kashmir. This trip becomes the turning point in his life, as the new surroundings begin to loosen his rigid worldview.

In Kashmir, Shekhar meets Rajkumari, the lively daughter of a local doctor, and he feels drawn to her. Yet he resists letting his heart stray due to his mother's stipulations about aristocratic marriage.

A snowstorm traps them for two days, giving them time to talk and understand each other. During the enforced closeness, Shekhar's outlook begins to shift toward a freer, more heartfelt life.

Meanwhile, Mala gives birth to a son during the Kashmir episode. The birth complicates the family dynamics and deepens the stakes of the secret love.

Rajkumari and her father keep their romance and the possibility of Rajkumari's place in Shekhar's life a secret from everyone. They also hide it from Shekhar's sister and mother, preserving the illusion until they return home.

Back home, Shekhar confesses his love to his mother and reveals Rajkumari's name. She is shocked and initially mistakes the name for a fantasy princess, not a real person.

Learning Rajkumari is not aristocratic, the mother initially rejects the marriage proposal. This rejection triggers further drama as loyalties and values are tested.

After further conflict, the mother comes to realize that true worth lies in the heart rather than titles. She finally accepts Rajkumari as the daughter-in-law.

It is revealed that Mala secretly married Jeevan a year earlier and that their son is legitimate. The family opens their doors to Jeevan and his child, validating love over status.

With Jeevan welcomed and Mala's union acknowledged, laughter returns to the household. Shekhar's transformation completes the family reconciliation.
