Judas and the Black Messiah

Bill O'Neal was a 17-year-old petty criminal who was arrested after attempting to hijack a car while impersonating a federal officer. FBI Special Agent Roy Mitchell approached him in jail with a deal: his charges would be dropped in exchange for his cooperation as an undercover informant. O'Neal accepted to avoid prison time, though his role would eventually evolve into something far more morally complex.

After Fred Hampton was arrested during a police raid, O'Neal's position within the BPP strengthened because he had maintained his cover effectively and gained the trust of other members. His infiltration work made him appear loyal, allowing him to climb the ranks to security captain despite being an FBI informant.

The Rainbow Coalition was a multiracial political alliance formed by Fred Hampton, uniting the Black Panther Party with other marginalized groups, including Latino gangs and white militia organizations. Hampton's goal was to build solidarity across different communities to fight systemic oppression, using his exceptional oratory skills to bring diverse groups together.

Despite developing genuine admiration for Hampton, O'Neal was trapped in an increasingly impossible situation. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover directly ordered him to eliminate Hampton as a threat to national security. Under intense pressure from Agent Mitchell and facing the consequences of trying to leave his informant role, O'Neal complied by drugging Hampton's drink with sedatives, leading to the police raid that resulted in Hampton's assassination.

The official story claimed it was a shootout, but evidence showed Hampton was essentially executed.

FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover viewed Hampton as a major threat to national security due to his extraordinary ability to unite diverse groups and his rapidly growing influence through the Rainbow Coalition. Hoover saw Hampton's charismatic leadership and community organizing (including the Free Breakfast for Children Program) as dangerous revolutionary activity that needed to be stopped.

Jimmy Palmer was a Black Panther Party member who was killed during an encounter with law enforcement. His death was revealed to O'Neal while Hampton was jailed, and it triggered further violence and chaos within the BPP ranks as members sought retaliation.

George Sams was a fugitive member of the Black Panther Party who was secretly cooperating with the FBI. O'Neal learned this information from Mitchell, which underscored the dangerous precarity of O'Neal's position within the BPP and highlighted that he wasn't the only informant embedded in the organization.

After Hampton's assassination, O'Neal met with Mitchell one last time and accepted money and a gas station key as his reward for carrying out the infiltration and betrayal. This final exchange symbolized the moral corruption and hollow outcome of O'Neal's actions as an informant.

Deborah Johnson was Hampton's romantic partner and fellow BPP member. The film shows their relationship developing earlier in the narrative, with O'Neal witnessing their romance which added emotional complexity to his betrayal. Johnson's fate after Hampton's assassination is shown through the grief at his funeral and the ongoing legacy of his work.

The Rainbow Coalition formed under Fred Hampton's leadership as he worked to unite various gangs and militia groups, particularly focusing on creating a multiracial alliance against systemic oppression. Hampton's vision was to bring together Black, Latino, and white groups who shared common enemies in poverty and police brutality, expanding the BPP's influence beyond Chicago.

Jake Winters, a BPP member, led a violent confrontation with the police in response to escalating violence against the Black Panther Party, particularly after the death of Jimmy Palmer. The film concludes with title cards revealing that Hampton's family, including Fred Hampton Jr., continued his fight for justice. The Rainbow Coalition and community programs he founded left a lasting impact on political organizing.
