Johnny Tsunami

Johnny Kapahala, a thirteen-year-old surfer from Hawaii, enjoys a close-knit life with his family—parents Pete and Melanie—and his legendary grandfather, Johnny Tsunami. When Pete lands a sudden job transfer, the family moves to Vermont, leaving Tsunami behind and forcing Johnny to adjust to wintry slopes instead of tropical waves.

In the new town, two rival worlds divide the mountain: the Skies, a private school where skiers reign, and the Urchins, a public school where snowboarders rule. Johnny enrolls with the Skies but would prefer to snowboard, and he forms a quick bond with Sam Sterling, a practical classmate who shows him the ropes on the other side of the mountain.

Across the hall, he meets Emily, Headmaster Pritchard’s daughter, and a potential ally and love interest, while Brett — a skilled skier and rival who also wants Emily— challenges him. Emily’s learning sessions on the slopes become a test of balance and courage, and a near-fall during a lesson puts everyone on edge. A snow ranger arrives to diffuse the tension, and a later family meeting—this time with Pete, Melanie, and Headmaster Pritchard Headmaster Pritchard—deepens the clash between Johnny’s desire to belong and his family’s expectations.

Sam reveals that he is moving to Iceland because his father is being reassigned as part of his Marine Corps career, a relocation that would also bring a promotion for his father. Pete hopes Johnny will adapt to life at the private school, but Johnny wrestles with the pull between his old life and the new path his family wants him to follow.

To reconsider their choices, Johnny and Sam secretly return to Hawaii to spend time with Tsunami, where the easygoing wisdom of the islands contrasts with Vermont’s rigid rules. When they come back, Pete confronts the consequences of his hardline stance, and Melanie voices how she longs for the easygoing partnership she once knew. Tsunami’s presence nudges Pete toward gentler guidance, suggesting that letting Johnny make his own mistakes might help him grow rather than breaking his spirit.

With renewed trust, Johnny and Tsunami decide to ride the skiers’ side of the mountain, embracing the challenge together. The moment culminates in a friendly yet high-stakes race against Brett, who cheats but is ultimately outpaced by Johnny, who wins and, in doing so, helps bridge the gap between the two groups. Pete’s support and Johnny’s perseverance win him Emily’s respect, and the two begin to foster a real connection amid the changing climate of their world.

As the celebration settles, Randy and Ronnie, Randy and Ronnie, share the truth about the mountain’s past: they were the original Sky and Urchin, their families split the slopes long ago after a bitter rift. Now grown, they decide to reunite the mountain and open a new shop that invites everyone to share the best slopes, symbolizing a fresh start for the entire community. Their decision marks a hopeful turn for a town learning to blend surfing, snowboarding, tradition, and new friendships, with Johnny at the heart of the bridge between two seemingly different worlds.
