In 1948, a young James Baldwin journeyed from New York to Paris with the support of a fellowship. The 24-year-old writer sought refuge from American racism and personal struggles, immersing himself in the vibrant Algerian quarters and the artistic community of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. This first feature film, told through a subjective and impressionistic style, captures Baldwin’s experiences as he observes, absorbs, and begins to find freedom and a sense of self in his new surroundings, marked by artistic exploration and a lush musical score.
