What Happens at the End of Jane?
How Jane (2022) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
The ending of Calamity Jane sees Jane, driven by her grief and desire for justice after Wild Bill Hickok's murder, taking justice into her own hands. Throughout the film, she wrestles with her need for revenge and her understanding of morality. When Jane and Mason track down Jack McCall, she faces a crucial choice: to kill McCall and exact her revenge, or to trust Mason's belief in justice and the legal process. Despite her raw pain, Jane decides not to take revenge through violence; instead, she chooses to allow McCall to face trial. This decision reflects her growth and her desire to honor Wild Bill's memory by adhering to a higher sense of justice. In the end, Jane’s act of restraint signifies her strength—she recognizes that justice must be carried out lawfully, and that her own morality is more meaningful than succumbing to the cycle of vengeance. Mason’s steadfast support and her decision not to kill McCall highlight her transformation from a revenge-driven figure to a woman of principle, reaffirming that sometimes true strength lies in resisting one's impulses and trusting in justice.
