What Happens at the End of Him?
How Him (2019) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
The climax of Him delivers a violent and cathartic rejection of the sports industrial complex, culminating in Cam’s refusal to sign a contract that would essentially sell his soul. Faced with a cabal of wealthy team owners who view him as property rather than a person, Cam refuses to become the latest "mascot" in a long line of exploited players. Instead of accepting the mantle of the GOAT on their terms, he fights back, ruthlessly dispatching the trainer and the owners in a sequence that symbolizes his total break from their control. This moment is not just an escape; it is an act of rebellion against a system designed to consume athletes for profit.
The film draws a sharp distinction between Cam and his mentor, Isaiah. While Isaiah was fully consumed by the pursuit of greatness—willing to sacrifice his identity and body to remain a legend—Cam retains his moral compass and connection to his family. Isaiah smiles as he dies by Cam’s hand, content that he has witnessed the birth of a true predator, yet he misunderstands Cam’s motivation. Cam possesses the killer instinct Isaiah cultivated, but he channels it into destroying the cycle rather than perpetuating it. By killing the owners, Cam ensures that the generational trauma ends with him, preventing the exploitation of future players.
The ending also reframes Cam’s personal history, revealing that his father had already made a deal with the owners, essentially mortgaging Cam’s future long before he could choose it for himself. This revelation transforms Cam’s final stand into a reclamation of his own destiny. Director Justin Tipping intended this victory to be unambiguous; by having Cam slaughter the elites pulling the strings, the film offers a hopeful conclusion where the protagonist saves himself and the next generation. In the end, Cam becomes the true GOAT not by winning a championship, but by surviving the game itself and burning down the institution that sought to own him.
