Vittorio De Sica, a teacher barely able to support his wife Maria Mereander and their children, constantly daydreams that Parliament will raise teachers’ salaries and improve their lives. When an Indian prince (Sabu) arrives in Italy, De Sica helps him and receives a baby elephant as a thank‑you. The gift enrages the landlord, Nando Bruno, as well as other tenants and neighbours, prompting Bruno to seize the animal—only for the elephant, much like Lassie, to find its way back home.
