What Happens in Helium: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Helium (2014) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Alfred is a young boy staying in a hospital who suffers from an undisclosed terminal illness. Enzo is a janitor at the hospital who meets him during his rounds, and the two form a quiet, hopeful friendship. Enzo introduces Alfred to Helium, an attractive alternative to Heaven, because Alfred imagines Heaven is very boring. He explains that to reach Helium, he would embark on an airship that will come to pick him up, guided by a red balloon dog Enzo has crafted for him.

As Alfred's illness worsens, he is moved to a restricted unit that Enzo cannot access. [Enzo] sneaks onto the unit but is caught by the head nurse, Marijana Janković and barred from seeing Alfred. As Alfred's condition deteriorates, Enzo wonders whether his stories are harming the boy. He voices these concerns to a nurse:

> I’m feeding him lies.

> you’re giving him hope.

The nurse does not dismiss him and, instead, tries to find a way to let Enzo share the ending directly. When Alfred's situation reaches a critical point, Enzo writes out “the end of the story” to have the nurse read to Alfred, but she changes her mind and, instead, sneaks Enzo onto the unit to tell the rest himself.

From that moment, the film shifts to Alfred’s point of view, with almost no dialogue. The boy, fully dressed, rises from his bed and moves to the window. Outside, a giant airship waits for him. He steps onto a long ladder that stretches from the hospital to the airship, leaving behind a scene of the hospital windows lit with countless red balloon dogs as the airship rises into the sky.

Helium Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Helium (2014): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Enzo tell Alfred about Helium instead of Heaven?

Enzo creates Helium because Alfred finds the idea of Heaven boring. When Alfred asks what happens when he dies, Enzo notices the boy's dread of a dull, traditional afterlife. So he invents Helium, a bright, magical place reached by an airship, as a more appealing alternative that gives Alfred something wonderful to look forward to instead of fearing the unknown.

Q2

What does the red balloon dog mean in the story?

The red balloon dog serves as Alfred's personal signal to the Helium airship. Enzo crafts it specifically so that when the airship comes to take Alfred to Helium, the balloon dog will guide it to his window. It becomes both a comforting toy and a symbolic beacon linking Alfred's imagination to his hoped-for departure.

Q3

Why is Enzo barred from seeing Alfred?

After Alfred's condition worsens, he is moved to a restricted hospital unit. Enzo sneaks onto the unit to visit but is caught by head nurse Marijana Janković. She bars him from the unit, separating the boy from his only source of comfort and hope during his final days.

  • enzo barred
  • alfred moved
  • restricted unit
  • nurse marijana
Q4

Is Alfred's journey to Helium real or imagined?

The film leaves this deliberately ambiguous. From Alfred's point of view, he physically walks across a ladder to the waiting airship and departs into the sky. The story presents it as a beautiful death metaphor, a child escaping illness and finding peace. Whether this is literally true or a poetic representation of his passing is left for viewers to interpret.

  • airship

Q5

Why does the nurse let Enzo see Alfred at the end?

After Enzo writes "the end of the story" hoping the nurse will read it to Alfred, she changes her mind. Moved by his dedication, she decides to let Enzo tell the ending himself rather than just reading it. This allows Enzo to be with Alfred directly during his final moments, providing the closure both needed.

Q6

What do the red balloon dogs in the hospital windows represent?

As the airship departs, the hospital windows light up with countless red balloon dogs, a visual payoff to the symbol Enzo introduced. This shows that hope and imagination have spread beyond just Alfred, suggesting the stories touched others or that Alfred's departure creates a magical ripple visible to everyone in the hospital.

Foreshadowing: The red balloon dog that Enzo creates early in the film becomes a symbol that multiplies at the end.

  • balloon dogs ending
  • hospital windows

Q7

Why does Enzo question whether his stories are harmful?

When Alfred is moved to the restricted unit and Enzo cannot reach him, he fears his fantasy stories have been building false hope. He tells a nurse "I'm feeding him lies," worried that giving Alfred unrealistic expectations about an afterlife could be cruel. The nurse counters that he is "giving him hope," framing the moral tension between truth and comfort.

Q8

What happens when Alfred leaves his bed at the end?

The film shifts to Alfred's point of view with almost no dialogue. He rises from his bed fully dressed, walks to the window, and sees a giant airship waiting outside. He climbs onto a long ladder stretching from the hospital to the airship and ascends, leaving behind the hospital as the airship rises into the sky.

Q9

Why does Alfred think Heaven would be boring?

As a young child facing death, Alfred expresses that the traditional concept of Heaven sounds dull and unappealing to him. This prompts Enzo to create Helium, a fantastical alternative with airships, adventure, and wonder, specifically tailored to what would excite a child rather than comfort an adult's religious expectations.
