Four Welsh rugby club members embark on a Paris weekend that blends sport, nostalgia, and misadventure as they travel to see Wales face France in the Five Nations—a match that could seal the Grand Slam. The trip centers on Caradog Lloyd-Evans, a funeral director who once served in occupied Paris toward the war’s end. He funds his son’s plane ticket with a condition: Glyn must join him on a sort of wartime pilgrimage to find his “little butterfly,” a fleeting romance from the past. Their search leads them to a Parisian scene far rougher than the quiet memory Caradog hoped to recapture, and the innocence of the pilgrimage collides with the city’s present-day grit.

This pilgrimage bears fruit in a surprising way when a girl who seems like his long-lost sweetheart crosses paths with them, but the truth is sharper than the memory. The girl turns out to be Odette, the daughter of Caradog’s old flame, and the moment of reunion comes with a twinge of disappointment for the elder man. Meanwhile, the trip’s other thread follows the club’s secretary, Mog Jones, a former player whose own dreams of glory never came true. At the same time, Caradog finds himself reconnecting with the “butterfly” figure who haunts his recollections, a presence embodied by Madame in a bustling Parisian strip club, where the line between memory and reality blurs in a swirl of neon and laughter.

Back at the hotel, the party’s arrangements unravel into chaos that spills into the club itself. A lively evening of revelry escalates into a mass brawl, drawing in locals and the police, and leaving the four men facing arrest. Caradog’s fate seems sealed at first, but his ally in the club—the stern, protective Madame—facilitates a precarious escape, and Glyn hides in Odette’s room as the situation cools. The group’s predicament pivots around Maldwyn Pugh, the camp boutique owner who becomes the unlikely bridge between the men and the match that awaits. Maldwyn Pugh is the only one of the quartet who actually makes it to the start of the game, while Mog remains jailed as the alleged ringleader.

As the match begins, timing and luck determine the fate of the group. Mog Jones is released halfway through the first half, but by the time he reaches the stadium, only seconds remain. Wales does not secure the Grand Slam this time, and Maldwyn Pugh leaves the stands without the signature he hoped to secure from Gareth Edwards, a symbol of the hoped-for Welsh triumph. The whistle blows, and Caradog is found after the game, with Madame believing the worst. In a final, sly reversal, Odette fires a soda siphon toward him, a moment that punctures the illusion of his wartime wanderings. The film closes on a wary, wry note as Caradog warns his son about the perils of overseas travel, a sober counterpoint to the weekend’s reckless laughter and old dreams.
