John, who runs the nation’s largest five‑and‑ten‑cent‑store chain, relocates his family from Kansas City to New York, but his relentless work pulls them apart. His wife Jenny feels isolated, son Avery despises his job, and daughter Jennifer is shunned by classmate Muriel and her friends. At a charity bazaar Jennifer meets Berry, sparking instant chemistry, yet Berry is engaged to Muriel, who insists the wedding proceeds. Even after marrying, both remain fixated on each other, while Avery laments the loss of their once‑happy Kansas City life.
