In the film’s climax, Lim Kyu-nam makes a daring run through the minefield, desperately trying to reach South Korea and gain his freedom after a long and arduous journey. As he approaches the border, he is faced with Li Hyun-sang, who has been relentlessly pursuing him. Lim tries to convince Li to let him go, warning that South Korea might not be the paradise he imagines and that he could still be ostracized for being from the North. However, Lim’s resolve to forge his own path remains firm; he is willing to sacrifice everything for his independence. Just as Lim is about to cross into South Korea, Li catches up and shoots him, severely wounding him. Despite his injury, Lim manages to call the South Korean army to announce his defection and makes a final dash toward freedom.

In an unexpected act of compassion and recognition of his friend’s determination, Li, who is about to deliver a killing blow, experiences a moment of clarity. Seeing how desperately Lim yearns for a chance at life beyond the oppressive state, Li chooses to spare him. Instead of killing Lim, Li allows him to escape across the border. As Lim finally reaches the South Korean side, he finds safety and begins a new life, symbolizing hope, freedom, and the human desire to break free from constraints. Meanwhile, Li returns to his duty but is visibly affected by the encounter, reminiscing over the friendship they shared and the dreams of freedom that Li himself has sacrificed. The film closes with Li reading a book about explorers, hinting that even those bound by the system might yearn for their own escape and sense of possibility. Lim’s journey ends with him alive and free, carrying the necklace Kim’s family, and with a renewed sense of hope, while Li’s act of mercy underscores the film’s subtle message about the human spirit’s resilience and the transformative power of compassion.
