In a stark frontier setting of 1851, Annie Herron endures severe mistreatment at the hands of her husband, Simon Herron, while his brother, George Herron, stands by with little power to intervene. The story unfolds with a chilling twist when Simon is murdered, and Annie becomes convinced that she herself is the killer, a fear that presses her toward a drastic decision.

The film then traces Annie’s origins and the brutal arc that leads to that moment. She begins life in an orphanage and is arranged into marriage with Simon, who ferries her to a half-built homestead. There, Annie is conscripted to cook and clean for both men, living under a regime of control and fear. Night after night, Simon subjects her to aggressive, coercive sexual advances, including rape, while George pleads with his brother to treat Annie with decency. His pleas fall on deaf ears as Simon’s cruelty grows, leaving Annie increasingly vulnerable and isolated.

Days pass, and Annie, overwhelmed by what has happened, self-admits to the jail while George flees to stay with a neighboring family. The case takes an unexpected turn when Henry reads an unsent letter from Annie that exposes the full scope of her suffering; moved by her plight, he chooses to dismiss the formal investigation and allows Annie and George to live their lives. In a poignant moment, Henry reveals to Annie that Sadie is dead, and they share a heavy, healing hug.

A year later, in a church ceremony, George marries Jenny from the neighboring Treece family, while Annie discovers she is pregnant. The paternity remains uncertain—whether the child belongs to Simon or George—but Annie chooses to name the baby Simon’s child, ensuring the infant will always be cared for. George offers a hollow apology for not being there, and Annie, finding a measure of forgiveness, accepts him. The film closes on a tentative note of reconciliation as Annie and Henry share a quiet dance at a village party, a fragile peace underscored by the weight of what has happened and what remains unresolved.
