Before Michael Mak’s *Sex and Zen* became a 1990s cult classic, Ho Fan’s *Yu Pui Tsuen* (The Carnal Prayer Mat, 1987) offered a similar erotic tale without Amy Yip’s star power or overt comedy. The film follows a young man who dreams of drowning after a night of passion and seeks a Buddhist monk’s interpretation. The monk warns against excessive fleshly indulgence, but the man ignores the counsel, marries a virgin and pursues numerous affairs before finally grasping the monk’s sage warning.
