Dubravka, Lina Braknyte, is a teenage girl on the cusp of adolescence who navigates an emotional journey along Crimea’s picturesque Black Sea coast. She spends her days on the sunlit fields playing soccer, swimming in the warm sea, and racing with the boys, finding bursts of freedom in motion and play. Yet as she begins to mature, she finds herself in a liminal space: she isn’t drawn to childish games anymore, but her presence is still overlooked by older peers, leaving her wondering where she fits in. The tension is palpable during a rehearsal of The Snow Queen, where she feels the warmth of the stage but is kept at the margins by the older cast members, a moment that underscores her growing sense of separation from the world she once easily joined.

The turning point comes when Valentina Grigoryevna, a charming and beautiful woman, temporarily moves into her home. Locals mistake her for a famous actress, and she is, in fact, a textile engineer on vacation. Dubravka admires Valentina’s poise and warmth, eagerly seeing in her a figure who shines with attention and admiration. But Valentina’s presence also stirs trouble when she befriends Pyotr Petrovich, Dubravka’s neighbor, a single father of two. Jealousy and hurt mingle inside the girl as she fabricates stories about Pyotr, telling Valentina outrageous lies, including a claim that he poisoned one of his former wives. The situation worsens when Pyotr accidentally breaks a seashell that Dubravka had painstakingly retrieved for Valentina, a small but painful symbol of the care she had invested and the trust she hoped to earn.

As events unfold, Dubravka begins to learn the complexities of human relationships and the value of empathy. She confronts her own ruffled feelings and works toward reconciliation rather than lingering in resentment. She makes a peace with her rival, described as Iron in the story, and she also finds common ground with Pyotr, realizing that her hurtful acts have damaged more than one relationship. In the film’s closing scenes, Dubravka bids farewell to friends who are leaving for Leningrad, and she chooses to share Valentina’s address with Pyotr, a small act loaded with trust and the wish to keep lines of communication open. This ending symbolizes a turn toward emotional maturity for Dubravka, a readiness to navigate future friendships and challenges with more sensitivity, awareness, and responsibility.
