Plot Summary
Set in 1550, Sir George Vernon contracts his teenage daughter Dorothy to marry John Manners, son of the Earl of Rutland, with a clause that the union must occur on her eighteenth birthday or Sir George must pay a hefty forfeit. When rumors surface of John’s wild conduct in France, Sir George annuls the match and offers Dorothy to her cousin Malcolm. Rutland demands the penalty, while John meanwhile befriends Mary Stuart, the rival of Queen Elizabeth.
