What Is Do Not Disturb About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of Do Not Disturb (1965) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

When American executive Mike Harper relocates to England for a career opportunity, he envisions a stylish life in the heart of London, but his wife, Janet Harper, has a different vision for their new home. She soon discovers a charming rural estate in Kent, thirty miles from the city, setting the stage for a classic clash between domestic tranquility and professional ambition. While the English countryside offers scenic beauty, the distance creates an immediate strain on the couple's routine, leaving Janet isolated as Mike navigates the demands of his new role in the textile industry.

Mike’s frequent absences and late nights in the city fuel Janet’s growing unease, and her attention turns to his attractive assistant, Claire Hackett. As Mike spends more time in London—often in the company of bachelor friends—Janet feels increasingly sidelined, and her suspicions about his fidelity begin to fester. The situation is hardly helped by their meddling landlady, Vanessa Courtwright, who seems all too eager to stir the pot with her own observations about the couple's fraying connection.

Desperate for a change and eager to turn the tables, Janet decides to shake up the status quo. She hires a charismatic Italian antiques dealer, Paul Bellari, to redecorate their home, hoping his undeniable charm might serve a dual purpose. As Paul brings a touch of continental flair into the Harper household, Janet finds herself navigating a complicated game of appearances, where the lines between genuine connection and strategic jealousy begin to blur.
