What Happens at the End of Disco?

How Disco (2020) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

Disco Inferno presents a complex and haunting ending that blurs the line between reality and imagination, leaving it up to the viewer to interpret what truly happened. Throughout the film, we see the troubled spirit of Sister Lynn, a woman consumed by jealousy and guilt over her inability to become a mother, which ultimately led her to commit a terrible sin—killing an innocent woman and taking her baby. Sister Lynn’s spirit remains tied to the church where she died and, later, the abandoned site where the new nightclub, Inferno, is built.

In the film’s climax, we see Mel, who is pregnant, participating in a dance competition at the Inferno club, which stands where the church once was. As Mel prepares for her performance, she begins to experience visions of Sister Lynn, who appears to be seeking to take her baby. It is revealed that Mel is actually the girl from Sister Lynn’s past—her own mother was murdered by the vengeful spirit when Mel was a child, and she was handed over to social services. Now, on the brink of motherhood herself, Mel’s subconscious fears and guilt manifest as a ghostly presence that tries to claim her unborn child.

The intense confrontation between Mel and Sister Lynn at the end signifies a fight of fears—two women, one desperately wanting to be a mother and the other betrayed by her own tragic past, clashing in a supernatural struggle. When Brandon enters and reveals to Mel that she is pregnant, her realization and the affirmation of her motherhood seem to dispel the spirit. With the spirit’s departure, the danger subsides, and Brandon joyfully lifts Mel, symbolizing hope and new beginnings.

Ultimately, the ending can be seen in two ways: either Sister Lynn’s spirit truly lingers, targeting women who doubt themselves as mothers, or her presence is symbolic of Mel’s internal fears about pregnancy and becoming a mother. The film invites us to interpret whether it is a literal haunting or a manifestation of psychological anxiety. Nevertheless, Mel’s survival and her declaration of pregnancy mark the start of a hopeful future, free from the ghostly shadows of the past.
