In July 1782 France, the young Marchioness Caroline meets soldier Gaston on her birthday and they fall instantly in love. Gaston, bound to his military ambitions, refuses commitment. Caroline later marries a politician, but the outbreak of the French Revolution forces her to flee the guillotine. While escaping she reunites with Gaston, who decides to aid her.
