Roger de Vetheuil, a wealthy married industrialist, is confident he will age in peace. His certainty is shattered when blackmailer Jean Pelletier—known to police as a mobster—accuses him of usurping a fortune. Vetheuil, convinced he is being slandered, refuses to cooperate with the extortionist and turns to the authorities. Pelletier then testifies, and the scandal quickly becomes a public affair.
