Adam recounts his bond with an older cousin who had cerebral palsy. They pretended to be superheroes, leapt from the shed, and raced down the street with an old shopping trolley. He notes the cousin’s limp left arm, strong right one, their aunt’s calming phrase “bake a cake,” and his love of swimming. On Adam’s eighth birthday a tragedy separates them, leaving Adam to wonder if his cousin still smells of licorice.
