Simon’s life spirals into chaos after he loses his job and faces constant harassment from a gang led by Jordan, the son of a gangster named Paul Franklin. In a moment of desperation, Simon intervenes to help Jordan after an accident, unintentionally knocking him into a coma. Despite his good intentions to do the right thing, everything around him quickly turns against him. The police and the criminal world become entangled in a web of lies and manipulation, with neither side fully trustworthy. Simon’s honesty is compromised by Harry, an old man with dementia, who falsely accuses him of abuse, and by Jordan himself, who blackmails Simon into paying him off to keep quiet. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Simon is trapped in a cycle of misfortune largely beyond his control. When Jordan wakes up and remembers everything, he uses the situation to blackmail Simon, demanding money to stay silent. This forces Simon into a difficult position, especially as Paul begins to suspect his son’s involvement in criminal activities, and the police start closing in on the truth.

In the climax, Simon attempts to escape and protect his family. When Paul’s men break into his house, Simon’s daughter Sophie has an asthma attack, forcing him to risk returning home for her inhaler. That act brings him face-to-face with danger, as Paul’s men catch up to him. In a tense confrontation, Harry intervenes by stabbing Jordan, causing him to bleed but survive. Despite the violence and danger, Paul shows mercy, choosing not to kill Simon but instead shooting him just above the head in a symbolic act. This act of mercy is rooted in his recognition that Simon, like his own son, is a victim of circumstance and that Simon’s instinct to help others stems from a better nature, not malice. Ultimately, Simon’s life is spared, and he and his family leave Birmingham to start anew elsewhere, finding peace after chaos and injustice. The ending emphasizes that, despite all the misfortunes and betrayals, acts of kindness and mercy can still prevail in a corrupt world.
