In 1976, Karen and Barry Mason accepted a surprising opportunity to distribute Hustler Magazine, a decision that unexpectedly immersed their family into the vibrant LGBT community of Los Angeles. They transformed Circus of Books into a thriving cultural center, providing a safe space and vital resources. As they built this unique business, they faced significant challenges, including federal prosecution, the devastating AIDS crisis, and the complexities of raising a family while living double lives in a time of prejudice and evolving social norms.
