Durbin delivers her most dramatic performance in this bleak holiday tale. Though the title hints at a feel‑good story, the film sharply opposes It’s a Wonderful Life. The story, in flashback, follows Abigail Martin as she marries aristocrat Robert Monette, only to find he inherits his family’s violent instability, dragging her into misery.
