In 1966 a former gymnast returns to his native Danzig, now part of Poland, and reflects on his schoolmate Joachim Mahlke, who vanished during the war. Mahlke, once mocked for his large Adam’s apple, becomes a celebrated diver, steals a Knight’s Cross and is expelled. He later enlists, earns a medal, but the school principal rejects his redemption, prompting Mahlke to desert the army.
